The Complete and Accurate Pirata Morgan

Pirates. They're everywhere. A decade out from the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, and our society is still lousy with them. They made a comeback in the media. They made a comeback in our humorous dialects. They even made a comeback in actual piracy. But wrestling? Wrestling doesn't need a piracy comeback. It still reels from the reign of terror of the most foul-tempered, bloodthirsty maniac ever to don an eyepatch - to cover up a legit empty socket, in fact - and sail the high seas looking for gold, ale, and wenches...a journey that continues to this very day.

Well, it should be reeling, anyway. Pirata Morgan is an awesome, awesome wrestler, and one of my all-time favorites. Lucha brawling, at it's best, is probably my personal favorite style of wrestling, and Morgan is the God-Emperor of lucha brawlers. I mean, what says professional wrestling quite like a man coming to the in an eyepatch and a Captain Crunch hat, punching you in the face until you bleed like a faucet, then sucking it up and spitting it in the air like Muta's mist? Nothing, that's what. Morgan is an amazing wrestler with an incredible working knowledge of what makes wrestling great, and a long career in places that have historically lacked available footage or have otherwise gone under people's radar, which means he's a pretty ideal candidate for a Complete and Accurate. And that's exactly what I intend to do. As with the others, the matches will all be rated as EPIC, GREAT, FUN, or SKIPPABLE, and compiled here. Now, set sail!

Pirata Morgan, El Hijo del Pirata Morgan, & Barba Roja vs. Negro Navarro & Los Traumas IWRG 4/14/2011 - GREAT

This is kind of an odd note to start this project on, I admit, but it was on my list of stuff I've been meaning to watch already, so why not? The thing is that while it's a great match, it's not really about Pirata, at least not as an active competitor in the match. It mostly focuses on the second generation guys on both teams, with Pirata and Navarro both playing supporting roles. Fortunately, the Traumas are awesome, and I thought the younger Piratas stepped up pretty big here. Still, the old-timers are plenty fun in their limited roles. This is also a bit of an odd place to start because Morgan's performance here is not what I usually think of when I think of Pirata Morgan. That's not to say it's bad. It's actually quite good, and it adds a lot to the match. It's just that I just got done describing him as this great violent lucha brawler in the intro, and he works this match as an old-fashioned cowardly heel. It's not the performance choice I tend to associate him with. But versatility is often the mark of a great performer, something which Pirata most certainly is, so I shouldn't be too surprised that he looked as comfortable as he did stepping out of his comfort zone. Basically, this is less of a great Pirata Morgan match than it is a great match that had Pirata Morgan giving a very good performance in it, but if you haven't yet, you should check it out anyway.

Pirata Morgan vs. Vampiro Canadiense CMLL 7/17/1992 - SKIPPABLE

On the other end of the spectrum, we have this - a match much more in line with what I think of when I think of great Pirata performances, but that ultimately doesn't work overall. Take a guess who's fault that is. To be fair, this isn't Pirata's most dynamic performance, either, but I think a lot of that is down to how Vampiro eats his offense. He's very much into the W/WWF/E style of bumping off of everything instead of eating offense in stand up brawling, and the result is an uncharacteristically sluggish Pirata apuestas match. It's kinda telling that one of the more entertaining parts of the match was when Vampiro got trapped in the corner, and Pirata really got to lay in a Pirata level beating. It's not even like Vampiro is a particularly impressive bumper, either. His corner bumps in particular looked like shit. He would sorta jump onto the bottom turnbuckle and then act like he hit either his chest or his head on the top and fall down. Really goofy looking. Pirata was still pretty game here, and while he had to dial back his pace and intensity for Vampiro, he still looked pretty good. Also, it's an early 90's Vampiro match, so even if the work wasn't the best, you at least got a really hot crowd. Highlight of the match is Pirata trying to throw Vampiro onto a row of chairs. The menfolk clear out, but one woman rushes in, presumably in a desperate attempt to stop him. Unfortunately, there's just one of her and four chairs, so Pirata just dumps Vampiro onto the seat next to her. They did have the good sense to let Pirata control most of the offense in the match, winning the first fall decisively and losing the second after Vampiro fluked into a brief offensive run. But then they have one of the weirder babyface comeback spots at the top of the third, as he stumbles into the crowd, still selling like he's totally loopy, then walks back into the ring, and suddenly he's completely healed from everything he had taken before and is doing energetic babyface dancing spots en route to Pirata getting a haircut. Pirata was solid, and there were enough entertaining moments that this would have been FUN if Vampiro had been at least half-way competent, but c'est la vie. At least he bled.

Pirata Morgan, MS-1, & Espectro Jr. vs. Octagon, Heavy Metal, & Intocable AAA 6/20/2004 - GREAT

Now this is what I'm talking about! Pirata and his gang of thugs lay waste to some mediocre technicos who at least have the good sense to eat the beating well. Great opening stretch of the Infernales (weird applying that name to a team without [and not feuding with] Satanico) going completely out of control pounding the technicos. I think Espectro Jr. may actually be the star in this regard. He looks like a real killer here. But Pirata is right there with him, socking dudes hard and throwing a big lariat on the outside that sends Intocable over the guardrail. Then the technicos rally, and as good as Pirata was at laying in a beating, I think he's even better in this match taking one. He takes a posting really well, and looks really good eating Octagon's armdrags and a nasty low-flying tope into his gut. The big technico highspots were not pretty, but they were reckless and violent in a way I thought was befitting the reckless and violent tone of the match. Heavy Metal grabs a small package on Espectro Jr., and Pirata decides he's not going to take any chances, so he rushes the ring with...umbrellas? Short, brightly colored kendo sticks? Broken Badd Blasters? I don't really now, but he's wielding something pretty ferociously. He bashes Metal with one to break up the pin, and then starts distributing the others to his teammates. Pepe Tropicasas is reffing this, and is obviously not cool with the Infernales using foreign objects on his son, so Pirata does the sensible thing and hauls off and punches the old man in the face. Tropi takes the beating like a man, and the Infernales continue to stomp a hole in Heavy Metal as he desperately tries to cover up his father's body. The match falls a bit shy of the ten minute mark, there wasn't any blood, and I thought MS-1 - who hadn't been wrestling regularly since 1997 - kinda showed his ring rust a little. But Pirata and Espectro were awesome, the technicos were game, and overall, this was a blast.

And They Call Him Pirata Morgan...He's the Master of the Salmon Salts

Pirata Morgan & Brian Christopher vs. TAKA Michinoku & Aguila WWF 2/16/1998 - FUN

Hey, remember the Light Heavyweight division? Yeah, me neither, but it did give us the novelty of Pirata Morgan on WWF TV. According to Graham Cawthon's site, he had a pair of matches with them - this and an Aguila singles match from Shotgun Saturday Night that I'm a little curious about. This won't blow you away, and Morgan isn't even really featured that heavily in it, but when he is, he looks good. He rushes Aguila at the bell with a big clothesline, punches him hard in the dome, and then drops him with a tilt-a-whirl powerbomb to start things on a strong note. Aguila has a top rope hurricanrana that takes too long to set up and leaves Pirata standing around like a tool waiting for it, but he hits a nice corkscrew plancha onto both rudos right afterwords to make up for it. Christopher and TAKA get tagged in, and from there on out, it's mostly about them, with Pirata coming back in to lay some nice shots into TAKA before eating the comeback and the pin, and Aguila assisting in taking out Christopher. More of a neat aside than anything, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Pirata Morgan vs. Brazo de Oro EMLL 11/18/1989 - EPIC

In the super-secret DVDVR 80's Project forum, Phil said that this was "not really what you would expect from these two guys". And well, I kinda agree and disagree with that. On one hand, you see those two names in a singles match, you expect some serious violence to go down. On the other hand, this is a title match, and it's 1989, so lucha title matches are still being worked like lucha title matches. So, yeah, it's kinda not what you'd normally expect from them, but I don't really know what you should expect when you put these two guys against each other in a lucha title match setting. Ultimately, the beauty of the match is that it takes this "what happens when you put a pirate in the ring with a comedy relief guy and force them to have a fair fight?" concept and runs with it, with both guys playing it to perfection. Pirata offers a handshake to open the match, and Brazo is understandably leery, as it is Pirata. But it's also a title bout, so he may as well be sporting...but, his first instinct was right, and it's a trap for Pirata to sink in an armbar, and then a hammerlock. After watching him do it in a match from this year as a broken down old man, it's interesting to see young Pirata working stooge heel stuff, using (legal) trickery to take the advantage in this unusual setting and frequently scrambling out of the ring when Oro gets the upper hand. Oro looks good on the mat here, too, especially his Indian deathlock where he does the Eddy Guerrero shimmy to apply more pressure. Eventually, Pirata's blood gets angried up too much, and he says "fuck this polite shit" and blasts Oro in the teeth with a clothesline. But his attempt to follow up gets countered, and Oro grabs a nifty looking roll-up to win the first fall. Segunda caida takes us back to the mat for some more fun, before an Oro attempt and a monkey flip goes awry and Pirata falls back, dropping him face first on the top turnbuckle. Pirata forces a submission with a figure-four leglock, but initially refuses to break, and even after he does, he follows it with a big kneedrop onto Oro's leg, screwing it up even further. It should be noted that Oro's cornerman for this match is Shadito Cruz - patriarch of the entire Brazo clan - and he is trying to the best of his elderly abilities to get between his injured son and this mad dog of the seven seas, to little avail. Tercera caida has Pirata going right back to the leg, including locking on the figure-four again, but Oro guts it out and manages a comeback, even working over Pirata's leg and leaving both men hobbling around the ring. Unfortunately, he makes the critical error of doing a quebradora onto his injured knee. Both men are down, but Pirata comes to first, and takes the opportunity to sink in a cobra clutch for the win. Post-match, Oro puts the belt around Pirata's waist, and there's some legit handshaking, and that normally works in lucha title matches, but felt out of place given the tone of this one. Still, I can't complain about the body of the match at all. I know I painted a very specific picture of who Pirata Morgan was and what he did at the start of this project, but matches like this make me realize that there was more to him as a worker than even I give him credit for, and I want to see every Pirata title match after watching this.

Pirata Morgan, Verdugo, & Hombre Bala vs. Fabuloso Blondy, Brazo de Plata, & El Brazo EMLL 12/1/1989 - GREAT

Bucaneros vs. Brazos is an unqualified good in professional wrestling. Oro worked another match on the card, so we get the odd sight of Ken Timbs working as de facto babyface in Mexico. This is a lot more what you would expect from a Pirata vs. Brazo match, as the Bucaneros jump the Brazos plus Blondy at the bell and just beat the shit out of them for the entire first fall. It is kind of amusing to see the crowd rallying behind the Brazos when they're the focus of the beatdown, only to swing to the Bucaneros' side when they set their sights on Timbs. Then the technicos make their comeback in the second fall, and Timbs flips the switch from Georgia heel to Georgia babyface, which is really cool to see. He has some great brawling exchanges with Pirata throughout this match, but I thought they especially stood out here. Fall open with Timbs taking a great posting by Pirata (which he blades off of...only one guy in the match bleeds, oddly, but at least it's the one blonde guy), before slugging it out with Pirata later and closing the fall by sending Pirata into the post (which he also eats really well) while the Brazos take out Verdugo and Bala. Third fall is really fun back-and-forth stuff. The final exchange between Pirata and Timbs is great. Pirata misdirects Timbs with the left hand to pop him in the mouth with the right and throws him into the corner, but Timbs charges out with a great-looking Hart Attack-style clothesline. He spends too much time celebrating, though, and Pirata cracks him from behind with an ezuigiri before locking on the figure-four for the win. I don't know if this will make the 80's Lucha set. Phil wasn't crazy about it, and thought that Timbs made a poor substitute for Oro. He's certainly not Brazo de Oro's equal, but I thought he worked really well here, and the fact that Pirata Morgan vs. Fabuloso Blondy is a match-up that we're probably not going to see a whole lot of is too bad, because they were great against each other in this.

Pirata Morgan, Hombre Bala, & Bestia Salvaje vs. Solomon Grundy, Mogur, & Cachorro Mendoza EMLL 5/?/1993 - FUN

I remember during the making of the Texas set, when I watched a great Grundy/Fantastics vs. Tatum/Victory/Real Thing match, and was stunned at the realization that I had become a legitimate Solomon Grundy fan. I mean, he is not one of the all-time greats or anything, and his body of work won't blow you away, but he is the kind of wrestling oddity that you - the smart fan on the internet - don't necessarily expect to like, and who doesn't have the best of reputations, so when you watch his matches and see that he was actually a capable big man who sold well, had simple but solid offense, had lots of fun hillbilly shtick, and generally was entertaining more often than not, you kinda get behind the guy. So I was intrigued by the prospect of Grundy as a Pirata dance partner, and for the most part, they didn't let me down. Fun bit before the whistle with Grundy backing Pirata down in between signing autographs and holding babies, but the second the intros are done, Morgan blindsides him and starts laying waste to him, Pirata style. The tecnicos eat the opening beatdown from the Bucaneros plus Bestia really well before Grundy rallies the team (including a big avalanche to all three rudos and even teasing a dive at one point) and leads them to take the first fall. Second fall is a bit more orderly, but still really good. We get a great Pirata/Grundy exchange. It starts off with Pirata punching Grundy in the face - as most good things in wrestling do - but it is more about Pirata being a great stooge for Grundy's fun babyface act. He runs the ropes, but Grundy drops down, and catches him on the rebound with a savage butt-butt (Grundy's post-butt-butt jig was like a 0.7 or 0.8 Andre). Then Grundy runs the ropes, and Pirata drops down, only for Grundy to stop short and drop a big elbow on him. He drops another, and Pirata sells them both with the Wilhelm Scream, and the second one also has him pop up from the impact afterwords and stumble backwards through the ropes and straight to the floor, which is probably the most painful-looking comedy bump I've ever seen. Still, he makes his comeback, sending Grundy out of the ring and keeping him occupied while Bala and Bestia take out Mendoza. Third fall starts out kinda hot with the technicos firing back, but it's maybe three minutes long, the pacing is uneven (the other falls were six-seven minutes apiece, but they kept things lively throughout), and the finish feels slightly abrupt and pretty anti-climactic. It's frustrating. There was a lot of good brawling and shtick in this match, but it really fell flat at the end. Two GREAT falls and one SKIPPABLE fall feels like it should round up to GREAT, but I'm a big structure guy, and fumbling the tercera caida is a pretty big problem for me, so I'm dropping it down to FUN.

Pirata Morgan's Heart is Black, and His Lips Are Cold

Pirata Morgan, Cien Caras, & Gran Markus Jr. vs. Lizmark, Rayo de Jalisco Jr., & Atlantis EMLL 7/2/1989 - FUN

This got pretty wild and out-of-control, which is a setting Pirata usually excels in, but he's actually one of the lesser guys here. Not that he's bad, of course. He had some great bumping in the primera caida. But he didn't get much of a spotlight in this match. This was all about Rayo and Cien hating each other's guts, Atlantis being spectacular, and Ken Timbs sitting in the front row and being a distraction to the technicos, roughly in that order. And well, they delivered on those fronts. Rayo and Cien looked great against each other and got a ton of heat from the crowd, Atlantis looked like a king on offense, and while Timbs didn't add a ton to the match, I don't think he was out of place. Indeed, even with a comparatively unspectacular Pirata performance, Markus kinda looking like a chump, and Rayo and Cien spending much of the segunda caida brawling in a dark section of the crowd where I couldn't actually see what was happening, this was still well on the way to GREATness. That got decisively shut down by a tercera caida that barely seemed to exist. It's not long before Cien fouls Rayo and pins him, bringing the match to a very abrupt and awkward end. But on the bright side, they cover for it with a crazy post-match brawl that has Rayo and Cien totally teeing off on one another, Timbs charging into action, the crowd throwing trash at the rudos, and ends with Rayo and Atlantis both getting unmasked, with Rayo trying to make his way to the back, swinging wildly at officials while his head is wrapped in a green sweater. Don't count on seeing this as a match on the 80's Lucha set, but the post-match stuff might merit consideration as an extra.

Pirata Morgan, Pirata Morgan Jr., & El Hijo del Pirata Morgan vs. Dinastia de la Muerte TxT 2/25/2012 - GREAT

I started this project with a match that had almost the same lineup as this, and which happened roughly a year earlier, but somehow, the later match features the more spritely Pirata performance. Yeah, he is still not quite his old self, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much he was moving around and keeping active during the match. At one point in the first fall, he misses a charge at Navarro and goes flying through the ropes to the floor, which was a pretty nasty bump for a guy that old and broken down. Anyway, like the match a year ago, this is mostly built around Pirata's kids vs. Navarro's kids, with Pirata and Navarro themselves largely in secondary roles. There are some differences, though. The younger Piratas show some growth since last time, and this is probably the best they've ever looked. They work really well with the Traumas, doing some great brawling and busting out some crazy double and triple-team moves against each other, including the horrifying double DDT by the Pirata kids with Trauma II's legs suspended on Pirata Morgan's shoulders. The other difference with the match last year is that that one kept the old-timers more in the background, like they were at their kids Little League game, only they were allowed to get into violent brawls with the other parents. Here, the focus is still on the kids, but they spend much of the match setting up a big Pirata/Navarro showdown....that never really happens. Instead, we have an odd finish with the younger Piratas pinning the Traumas while Navarro pins Pirata, resulting in a draw. Oh, well. There's still plenty here to recommend. Also, Mano Negra is one of the refs here! That doesn't ever really amount to anything, but I though it was kinda neat regardless.

Pirata Morgan vs. Heavy Metal vs. El Texano vs. Sangre Chicana AAA 6/15/2003 - SKIPPABLE

It's not entirely clear to me if this is a four-way, or if it's a handicap match with the three rudos against Heavy Metal. Honestly, I don't care. This was pretty boring in a way that doesn't lend itself well to witty criticisms, so I can't do much with it. Pirata and the other rudos were all serviceable, and Metal wasn't spectacularly bad, but no one was especially good, so it just ended up being dull as shit. This was just very tame by Pirata's standards, and if there's one thing I don't want from a Pirata match, it's tameness. I guess Pirata had earned the right to phone it in every now and again by this point, but it's weird seeing him phone it in in a hair match at the biggest show of the year for a major promotion a decade ago, while he's busting his ass in a minor promotion today.

Stairway To The Stars, Pirata Morgan's Got Better Things To Do

Pirata Morgan & Ari Romero vs. El Jalisco & Super Star WIN 12/24/1989 - FUN

I had set my expectations unreasonably high for this one. This was my first time seeing El Jalisco, and for those who don't know, he was the other guy in the match where Pirata lost his eye. Pirata - then simply Ramon Morgan - was working a match against Jalisco in 1981. He went for a tope con hilo, Jalisco was out of position, and Morgan somehow managed to land eyeball-first on the concrete, exploding it on impact. And you would think an incident like that would make every subsequent match between the two an automatic grudge match. Hell, that's how it worked for Iceman King Parsons and Buddy Roberts, and Buddy's hair grew back. So I had certain expectations of bloodletting that this match really didn't live up to. Furthermore, WIN seems to have been a promotion that ran mostly short, one-fall matches, so there's not much time to get anything done, anyway. That said, judging the match on it's own merits, it is pretty good while it lasts. Pirata's exchanges with Jalisco aren't what you would want them to be given their history, but they do both lay into each other well enough, and I really liked Jalisco's take on the tope en reversa. That's usually a very graceful move, but he just spins around and launches the back of his head into your face. These two probably did have an EPIC revancha match at some point, but this wasn't it.

Pirata Morgan & Barba Roja vs. Antifaz del Norte & Rico Rodriguez ACM 8/12/2012 - SKIPPABLE

Oh, for fuck's sake, Monterrey, can we have a little bit of oversight on your zany rudo refs? Just a little? This is another Monterrey match that would've been good if it wasn't drowning in nonsensical referee horseshit. I think I've made it pretty clear by this point that I am tolerant of referees behaving as characters. I'm tolerant of a certain degree of rudo bias from certain lucha refs. But I keep getting hit with these Monterrey matches where the refs aren't just getting overly involved, they're getting stupidly involved. The rudos win the first fall when the ref gives them fast counts over the technicos. Why are all his subsequent counts normal speed? Why does he not just call for the bell when a technico is in a hold and say that they tapped even if they didn't? He's already established the lengths to which he'll go to help the rudos win. Why does he hold back afterwords? Hell, he's deliberately holding Antifaz in place so the rudos can beat him up. He can do that in the second fall, but he can't bring himself to give them another fast count win? Why? What the hell kind of sense does that make? And what the fuck was up with the finish? Pirata fouls Antifaz, and the ref starts second guessing himself. What? Why? You got physically involved in the match to help the rudos and gave them the first fall on a pair of fast counts, but this was going too far? Fuck, it wasn't even the first low blow in the match. Pirata kneed Rodriguez in the groin, and the ref was fine with that. Why is he squeamish now? Pirata is so distracted by the sheer randomness of the ref's moral compass that Antifaz is able to recover and foul him in return. The ref battles with his raging schizophrenia for way too long before declaring it a double DQ, which, fittingly, makes no fucking sense. And now, I know what it would be like to be a more serious football fan. The real tragedy is that there was a decent match buried somewhere in this avalanche of suck. Pirata and Antifaz both looked sharp. Barba Roja did some cool stuff and some shitty stuff. Rodriguez rounded out the cast. Ultimately, none of it mattered.

I'm Living For Giving Pirata Morgan His Due

Pirata Morgan, Emilio Charles Jr., & Hombre Bala vs. Super Mueneco, Hurrican Ramirez, & Ciclon Ramirez EMLL 3/12/1989 - GREAT

Here's another heaping helping of Pirata Morgan beating the shit out of people. I really never tire of this. This isn't the greatest beating he's ever lain on a group of technicos, but it's a pretty hard thing to screw up. Hombre Bala provides ample support. He and Pirata bust out the awesome two-person proto-Go 2 Sleep on Ciclon Ramirez near the end of the first fall, and then Bala just flapjacks Ciclon clear out of the ring right afterwords. Ciclon eats a ton of punishment here and looks great doing so. Hurrican, meanwhile is probably the most offensively dynamic guy on his team, throwing some pretty armdrags and having Ciclon back body drop him over the top rope onto Emilio on the floor. He also eats a nasty somersault senton and a piledriver from Pirata down the stretch, because apparently, Pirata Morgan hates his guts. The main contribution of Mueneco and Emilio comes near the end when Mueneco has Pirata in a scorpion deathlock, and Emilio jumps in front of him and starts mocking his "lolling his head around" zany comedy bit, so Mueneco releases the hold and punches Emilio in the face. I'm not sure why Emilio thought that was a good idea, but I was amused nonetheless. Phil thought the finish was flat, but the finish was Pirata clearing Mueneco out of the ring so Bala could tap Ciclon was a scorpion deathlock variant while Emilio crushed Hurrican with a top rope splash, and then they all went outside and mercilessly kicked the shit out of Super Mueneco for a while, so I can't really hate on that.


Pirata Morgan, Herodes, & Gran Markus Jr. vs. Solomon Grundy, Ringo Mendoza, & Atlantis EMLL 3/4/1990 - GREAT

Solomon Grundy sort of seems like he should be Dean Rasmussen's favorite wrestler ever. In fact, I'm only convinced that they're not the same person because Luchawiki has a picture of him from 2007, and I actually met Dean in person in 2008, and I could see a difference. Anyway, there is usually kind of a ceiling on how good Grundy matches can be, but this managed to bypass it largely by being worked less as a showcase for zany fat guy comedy antics and more as a straight lucha trios match that had some zany fat guy comedy antics in it. Grundy gets a lot of his silliness in, yes, but he also mixes in a standing dropkick that maybe wasn't the best I've ever seen, but was certainly impressive for a guy that size. Moreover, the rudos took the second fall by ganging up on the big man, bringing him to his knees, and then making him submit to Markus and Herodes holding him in place (with Herodes digging his fingers into Grundy's eye) while Pirata kicked the shit out of him. And the third fall is built around angry Grundy, which is...not totally unlike silly Grundy, actually, but there's definitely a different vibe to it. There is a sense of purpose to his hip-wiggling taunt that wasn't there before, never mind his actual offense. There are a bunch of fun performances from all the supporting players here, especially Atlantis, who has his high-energy offense on display here, especially in an early exchange with Pirata where he breaks out that fancy armdrag he had back in the day, and busting out a wild looking tope right before the finish. Ringo's no slouch, either, and has a great dive of his own, and Markus and Herodes both look great stooging, brawling, and bumping, including Herodes taking a spill that almost lands him in the lap of a little old lady in the front row. Still, Pirata is the guy who proves why he has a Complete & Accurate dedicated to him. Still the best Grundy stooge, still the most badass brawler, and still the craziest bumper, taking a great Jerry bump in the first fall, and then going too far trying to scoot away from Atlantis in the third, causing himself to accidentally take essentially an inverted Halloween bump. This was right on the border between FUN and GREAT, as no one was really exceptional in this, but everyone was really good, it had no real weak points, and I was thoroughly engaged throughout. Inverted Halloween bump and angry Grundy with nothing really bad to say about the match makes me lean low-end GREAT.

Frontenac Chateau, Baby, Pirata Morgan Crosses the Frontier at Ten

Pirata Morgan, Pierroth, & Emilio Charles Jr. vs. Huracan Ramirez, Blue Demon Jr., & Atlantis EMLL 1989 - FUN

Interesting match in that it had a great opening, a spectacular second fall, and a cool segment at the finish, but still doesn't feel any more than FUN. I don't know offhand which fake Huracan Ramirez this is, but he looks really good here, having a neat exchange with Dandy at the start of the match and a great one in the segunda caida with Pirata. He sends our man tumbling all over the ring with a series of great-looking headscissor takedowns and armdrags, really eye-popping stuff. The Atlantis/Emilio exchange that immediately precedes it is also really great. Also, fake Huracan has a really nice hurricanrana, which is important to have with that gimmick. Pirata's main contribution to the match - aside from eating all of Huracan's cool stuff - comes in the exchange at the end with Atlantis, where he takes a really high back body drop, followed by a crazy no-hands flip bump to the floor. And as soon as he gets up, he's met with a really amazing Atlantis tope. Lots of cool segments in this match, but unfortunately, the rest of it is just kinda solid, and Blue Demon Jr. stinks as usual. Enough to keep it enjoyable, but not to reach any higher than that.

Pirata Morgan, El Hijo del Gladiador, & Hombre Bala vs. Ciclon Ramirez, Javier Cruz, & Blue Demon Jr. EMLL 1989 - SKIPPABLE

There's a moment here and a moment there where this match is kinda cool. Pirata's performance isn't a standout by his standards, but he generally acquits himself well. Ciclon looks pretty good here, too, and appropriately enough, they share the big moment of the match, as Pirata bodyslams Ciclon off of the apron to the floor, which was just nasty as fuck. Still, Gladiador was a pretty poor substitute for Jerry Estrada or Verdugo, and outside of a nifty exchange with Ciclon in the second fall, I thought Hombre Bala's performance was disappointing. Not terrible or anything, but aside from the slam of death, pretty forgettable.

Pirata Morgan vs. Aguila WWF 2/17/1998 - FUN

This was Pirata's other WWF match, and like the first, it's inconsequential but entertaining. Pretty straightforward sub-five minute match with Pirata using his size and power to dominate and Aguila using speed and agility to overcome him. Pretty wild to see Pirata busting out more juniorish high-end offense to try and fit in with gringo expectations about what a junior is supposed to work like, but he does it very well. He uncorks a crazy rolling legbar here, as well as another tilt-a-whirl powerbomb which looked really hurty and felt like something that should have been a regular part of his offense if it wasn't already. Aguila's highspots all looked nice. Him armdragging Pirata off of the top rope was really cool. As mentioned, this was really short, and it didn't have the awesome heeling of Brian Christopher, but I thought both guys looked sharper than they did in the tag, and overall, this felt like the better of Pirata's two WWF outings.

Just Call Me Pirata Morgan, I'm Sure To Be The Lucky One When Destiny Assigns Wisdom

Pirata Morgan, Herodes, & El Hijo del Gladiador vs. Perro Aguayo, El Satanico, & Ringo Mendoza EMLL 12/17/1989 - SKIPPABLE

There is no reason for a match with this line-up to be this mediocre. Pirata vs. Satanico is a match-up that should tear down the house, and they were good, but a big step down from what you would expect. Really a step down even from lesser match-ups. Everyone else was just kinda there, save for Gladiador, who was outright shitty down the stretch with his "comical" selling. Yeah, this isn't much of a C+A entry, but there's really not a whole lot to say about this one.

Pirata Morgan, Arandu, & El Verdugo vs. Super Astro, Panterita del Ring, & Blue Demon Jr. Monterrey 1991 - EPIC

Now, this one I do have a few things to say about, not the least of which is "holy shit, this match is motherfucking AWESOME". This match had a little bit of everything: a great first fall built around the rudos destroying the technicos and rubbing it in their faces, a second fall built around more high energy technico offense and comedy routines, and a disgustingly violent third fall where Super Astro spews a load of plasma all over himself while he and Arandu try to kill each other. I don't think I've ever actually seen Arandu before, but he was really good in this, possibly the best guy on his team, which isn't a small feat, even if he was the one most heavily featured. He has a great look with his caveman singlet, tasseled boots, and giant poofy hair. He also seems to be working a forehead-based offense, as he spends at least half the match either punching Astro in the head, clubbing Astro in the head, headbutting Astro (which looks extra cool with his giant hair), or biting Astro in the head, which pays dividends in the end. This is really Super Astro's match, though. He doesn't have a big dive, which is a little surprising (though Panterita del Ring - the young Safari/Ephesto - comes through on that end), but it does show the full complement of other stuff he can do - his bumping, his brawling, his selling, his slick offense, his characterization, and in case I haven't mentioned it already, his blood. God, does he bleed a lot in this. There is a great shot of the mat at one point that looks like a Pollack. But yeah, this is a great match if you want a sense of Astro's depth as a worker, as they mostly ground the flier, and he still looks terrific. Pirata is mostly here to act as Arandu's heavy, it would seem, but he is very good in that role. He looks effortlessly cool as he is kneeing Panterita in the balls is the first fall, and then working bumbling rudo comedy in the second where he accidentally shakes Blue Demon Jr.'s hand and makes this big surprised face when he realizes what he's doing, but he actually transitions between two extremes of character very smoothly, so it never seems out of place. Also have to give some props to the crowd, who took dead aim on Arandu's head with their trash after he fouls Astro leading to the win. There were at least two soda cups that landed square on his noggin during the closing moments of the match and the post-match stuff. I was genuinely impressed.

I should note that Tim Evans - who uploaded this match and a lot of the other matches I've reviewed for this project - made a slight error here. The video linked above only shows the first two falls of the match, but the third fall is in another video labeled "Atlantis, Super Astro & Lizmark vs. Arandu, Pirata Morgan & Angel Blanco". Just wanted to point that out in case anyone else - like me - got confused by that. Fortunately, his mistake is an easy one to work around, and considering he's making a match this good readily available to us, it's not like we'd have much room to complain, anyway. Thanks, Tim!

Pirata Morgan, El Hijo del Pirata Morgan & Eterno vs. Angelico, Veneno, & Toscano IWRG 2/9/2012 - SKIPPABLE

The first couple of minutes of this, entrances included, are actually worth checking out. Veneno's entrance is hilariously goofy. I didn't realize until after the fact that he was supposed to be a joke to begin with (more on that in a second), and I have watched enough AAA to just take it for granted that this guy I haven't seen since he was one of Pierroth's cronies in CMLL is now working a babyface Benny Hinn gimmick, as he places his hand on the foreheads of fans as he walks to the ring. There is one point where he comes up to a fat chick in the first row that everyone around her is pointing to, and it looks like a scene from Magic Mike or something. Then he puts his hand on her forehead, and she puts her hand on his forehead, and he ends up being driven back by the power...Antonio Pena would've wept. Or came. Or both. Toscano's entrance is like what John Cena's entrance must look like to people who hate John Cena. The camera aggressively zooms in and out, he grabs his junk with one hand and waves the other in the air like he just doesn't care, he plays air guitar, he signs the cross on his chest before grabbing his junk again...and then Hijo del Pirata charges down the ramp and punches him in the face. And I'm surprised Pirata didn't spend the rest of the match weeping openly over how proud he is of his son. So the first few minutes have some fun, nasty brawling in them from the rudos, and it's looking pretty great, but then Veneno decides "Hey, you know what this violent brawl really needs? Me working the match like an Osaka Pro comedy undercarder." Veneno is bad. Veneno is really, really bad. I'm at kind of a loss to describe his badness accurately. Apparently, he is working some kind of comedy gimmick, and when it doesn't involve televangelist healing techniques, it involves no-selling literally every bit of offense that comes your way while making the shittiest "funny" faces imaginable and often bursting into laughter. Before too long, any sense that you're watching an actual wrestling match is gone, and you are just watching some guys shitty slapstick comedy routine. Seriously, Kevin Steen would complain about Veneno detracting from his match with bad comedy routines. And shock of shocks, Angelico is still absolutely terrible, too. Toscano was pretty game, and the rudos were all giving it their best effort, but there was no saving this from Veneno, let alone Veneno AND Angelico. This felt like a match where Pirata potatoing Veneno for ten minutes while his son and Eterno chanted "RESPETO!" at him would have been perfectly acceptable.

With Satan's Hog No Pig at All, and the Weather's Getting Dry, Pirata Morgan Heads South from Altamont in a Cold-Blooded, Travelled Trance

Pirata Morgan & El Hijo del Pirata Morgan vs. Los Traumas vs. Pantera & Mascara Ano 2000 Jr. vs. Damien 666 & Bestia 666 IWRG 7/14/2011 - FUN

I am not one to conform to pro wrestling conventional wisdom if I don't actually agree with it. If I think the first Punjabi Prison match was better than the first Hell in a Cell match - and I do - I'll hold to that view regardless of how loony it looks from the outside. So it goes with my feelings on three/four/etc.-way matches. Conventional wisdom is that if you do them at all, you do them with elimination rules - as they do in this match - rather than a single fall. And well, I understand that line of thought and why it developed, but looking at it in practice, I could never bring myself to agree with it. It's a gimmick that tends to get in the way of a lot of basic wrestling psychology, and most wrestlers - even really good ones like some of the guys in this match - kinda strain to get around it in ways they don't with single-fall rules. Most obviously, there's tendency for wrestlers to break up nearfalls even though elimination rules mean that one opponent eliminating another will only benefit you. "Everybody wants to be the one to eliminate the Franchise!" Whatever, Joey. It's as dumb of a multi-man trope as the three-way's "one guy is dead on the outside while the other two have their turn", and I don't see a point in excusing one and not the other. But that alone could be accepted as a problem with the wrestlers rather than the match type, except I've seen an elimination rules four-way tag that was wrestled logically, and it made it wildly apparent that even when applied sensibly, the gimmick is just lame. The very first thing I ever reviewed on this blog was TNA's 2005 Unbreakable PPV, where a match of this type was wrestled without the stupidity usually associated with it (well, it had some of it's own unique stupidity, but nothing traditionally associated with elimination four-ways), and the result is that is that is was basically a glorified gauntlet match, so even at it's best, the gimmick is effectively useless. The only time I ever really got into an elimination-rules multi-man was Santo/Casas/Dandy, and that's really a Santo/Dandy match where Casas beats up both guys for a little while before leaving. By contrast, ROH's Four Corner Survival matches were rarely great, but they pretty consistently entertained me, since everyone involved was actually...well, involved, and it made sense for them to be. And again, it's a minority opinion, but it's still my opinion.

I say all this because I want to be clear that while I consider this match merely FUN, there are certain extenuating circumstances effecting that judgement. If those circumstances don't apply to you, I could see this getting the bump to GREATness. After the last 2011 Pirata match I reviewed - where he was good, but definitely showing his age - it was neat to see him all energetic and mobile here, especially in his exchanges with Damian. I also really dug his eliminations of Pantera and Trauma II. The rolling kimura to Trauma II was just plain cool, and the slingshot somersault senton to Pantera was a neat example of his lack of mobility actually being used to his advantage. Imagine an invisible Tully Blanchard doing a slingshot suplex to Pirata onto Pantera. There was also a lot of fun matwork early on from pretty much everyone, and a really fun, high-energy Pantera performance before his aforementioned elimination. For me, the structural problems still hamper the match, but for you, that might be less of an issue.

Pirata Morgan, Jerry Estrada, & Hombre Bala vs. Rayo de Jalisco Jr., Atlantis, & Alfonso Dantes EMLL 3/1987 - EPIC

This is a straight-up clinic on how to be an badass rudo trio. Los Bucaneros achieved a level of perfection in this field matched only by Los Infernales, which Pirata had also been a member of, making him sorta the Bobby Eaton of Mexico. Primera caida is built around the Bucaneros swarming individual tecnicos and mugging them, which is one of my favorite stock spots in lucha. They are fucking great at it, too. Really feels like a violent, out-of-control beatdown, which is what Pirata does best. They take the first fall after Pirata comes off the top with a great kneedrop onto Rayo, and then a badly beaten Atlantis gets thrown out of the ring, and it kinda looks like he's being forced to take a Jerry bump, like Estrada is giving him a taste of his own medicine. Second fall hits, and the technicos are all fired up and quickly retake control of the match. All three of the technicos are looking great. Atlantis has some beautiful exchanges here. Dantes - who I had seen nothing of before starting work on the Best of the 80's Lucha project - is a fucking tank, and is awesome bowling over the Bucaneros with his bulk. Even Rayo feels more serious than usual. He is still doing his comedy shtick, but it comes off less like silly fun babyface stuff and more like him using his quickness and unorthodox style to evade his opponents and keep them off-balance. And through it all, Pirata and his crew continue to work as a well-oiled machine, brilliantly setting up elaborate three-man stooging and bumping sequences like few other trios could. Really, just the fact that Jerry Estrada - one of the most coked up wrestlers in the history of the world - was consistently in perfect position to make all this stuff look right was amazing, and a tribute to their greatness as a team. The highlight comes after the technicos take the second fall, where the Bucaneros really turn it up. Let me see if I can walk you through this: one Bucanero (the lighting of the shot combined with the matching outfits and hairstyles makes it hard for me to see who is who here) holds Rayo while the other two try to double clothesline him. Rayo ducks, leaving the third Bucanero to eat the double clothesline. Rayo chucks one Bucanero into the ropes, but he catches himself and hangs in them a la T.J. Perkins. The second charges, but Rayo kicks out his legs, causing him to accidentally dropkick the first out of the ring. The third swings a wild lariat at Rayo, but he ducks and throws him into the ropes. He catches himself, but his legs still fly through and boot both of the other Bucaneros in the face on the outside. I guarantee my description didn't do the sequence justice. The Bucaneros take a moment to regroup after this, and after getting their minds right, they exact their violent revenge. A nasty triple dropkick to Atlantis' head takes him out of the match. Rayo makes one last valiant attempt at using his Rayoness to take back the match, but it's too little, too late, as the Bucaneros swarm him, pummel him, and then make him submit to the old Kaientai taunt where Estrada and Bala bend him over and hold him in place by his arms while Pirata stands on his back and taunts. They celebrate their victory by sending Rayo out of the ring with a big running dropkick, and then kicking at the fans surrounding the ring after the match. Could have used a more hectic finish, but everything up to that was hectic enough for my tastes. This is good old-fashioned lucha trios wrestling, just like mom used to make.

Pirata Morgan, Satanico, & MS-1 vs. Solomon Grundy, Mascara Sagrada, & Lizmark AAA 8/29/1993 - SKIPPABLE

The unlikely Pirata/Grundy war rages on, and you'd think adding Satanico to it would make it better than their last outing automatically. Sadly, this is not the case, as everyone other than Pirata and Satanico turn in sluggish performances, and even Satanico's isn't up to his lofty standards. Still, Pirata has a nice dive and a great bump. If I had my eyeball exploded because someone failed to catch me when I was doing a tope, I would probably be leery about ever doing them again, but Pirata was unafraid to dive headfirst into Grundy, so I was kinda impressed by that. Even more impressive - and something I'd be even leerier about doing - was his big bump of the match, as Mascara Sagrada hiptosses him over the top rope, and Pirata takes a no-hands back bump all the way to the floor. That was fucking terrifying, but in a very wrestling-appropriate way. One nice dive and one insane bump feels like it should be enough to get this match to FUN if anyone else gave a shit in this match, but they didn't, so it doesn't.

Pirata Morgan vs. Tiger Mask II AJPW 12/8/1984 - FUN

Pirata was a bunch of fun here. He wasn't afraid to smack Tiger Misawa around, both with standard brawling and with some flashier junior offense like his great second rope tope en reversa and another "so what if I lost an eye doing this" tope later in the match. He also isn't afraid to do some really neat bumping for Misawa. He gets a ton of height for a flip bump off of a back body drop. For his own part, Misawa shows some flickers of his future greatness (well, his tope rope somersault bodyblock isn't really indicative of his future, but it was indicative of greatness), but it's pretty clear he still has a way to go before reaching the legendary status he'd gain in the 90's. A flawed match, but still enjoyable, and another neat opportunity to see Pirata in a different setting. Definitely made me want to see him against some of the more substantive Japanese juniors of the era.

You're His For The Taking, Pirata Morgan Is Making A Career Of Evil

Pirata Morgan, Babe Face, & Cien Caras vs. Rayo de Jalisco Jr., La Fiera, & Lizmark EMLL 1986 - EPIC

Hey, you know who's an all-time great worker who you almost never see get talked up as one? La Fiera. And even if this match had nothing else going for it, this would still be an EPIC performance for him. Fortunately, this does have other stuff going for it, mostly in the form of Babe Face, whom Fiera would have a hair vs. hair match with the following week, and man, do they ever psyche you up for it here. Match opens with Babe Face posting Fiera and Fiera doing a disgusting bladejob off of it, and Babe Face starts punching and headbutting the open wound. The rest of the match is spent on Babe Face beating the shit out of Fiera, and Fiera doing a truly sublime job of selling it before finally getting his opening and turning the tables, busting Babe Face open in the process. The one downside to the awesomeness of all of this, though, is that Pirata and the rest of the gang are mostly thrown into the background here. He does still get to do some cool stuff, including the first appearance of the Muta-style blood spit (Fiera's, natch) in this project, and a moment where he knocked Lizmark through the ropes so he was hanging upside-down by his feet outside the ring, followed by him kicking out his legs so Lizmark fell head-first onto the floor. They were in the middle ropes, so it wasn't that big of a drop, but still, ouch. There was also some great brawling outside of the ring from all six guys in the finall fall, which included Pirata taking a flip bump into the ring apron, and an awesome exchange between him and Rayo at the end of the match where Rayo picked him up and chucked him over the top rope to floor, and followed up with a huge crossbody suicida from the top rope. Still this is less of an EPIC Pirata match than an EPIC match that happened to have Pirata in it as a positive contributor.

Pirata Morgan, Satanico, & MS-1 vs. Dos Caras, Canek, & Voodoo Mulumba UWA 9/18/1987 - SKIPPABLE

There were moments where this threatened to creep into FUN territory. The second fall, taken on it's own, was kinda entertaining, with a good Canek/Satanico exchange, a solid Pirata/Dos exchange, and MS-1 bumping big for Mulumba. But this one was never gonna go far, because Voodoo Mulumba is one of the shittiest wrestlers I have ever seen in my life. Mulumba, for those who don't know, is the infamous Big Red Reese, the guy they brought into Memphis to feud with Bill Dundee after he beat Lawler in the '85 loser leaves town match, and he absolutely bombed on top. Here, he's in with five other guys, all of whom I like to some degree or another, so the suck is diluted a little. But he's still the center of the match, and that's not good, because he is to fat guy wrestlers what Giant Gonzalez was to tall guy wrestlers. He is the fat guy wrestler who can't even be called upon to do basic fat guy wrestling stuff effectively. He almost falls over doing the "sit-down splash out of a sunset flip attempt" spot. His teammates Irish whip MS-1 into him so that he'll get knocked down by Mulumba's girth...and it's Mulumba who's driven back. The only other worthwhile thing about the match - which is also Pirata's one notable contribution to it - is the post-match, where the defeated Infernales dare Mulumba to come back and face them again, including Pirata climbing on MS-1's shoulders to overcome his size advantage. Otherwise, this is the first actively terrible match I've watched for this thing.

Pirata Morgan, Electroshock, & Bestia Salvaje vs. Negro Casas, Felino, & Heavy Metal AAA/CMLL 6/17/2000 - GREAT

This was from the big interpromotional "Padrisimo" show at Plaza de Toros, and Los Hermanos Casas get to reunite nine years before they could do it full-time in CMLL. Pepe Tropicasas is also one of the refs in this alongside El Tirantes, and we get a sweet moment in the beginning where he hugs all of his sons. But Pirata isn't much for sentimentality, and this breaks down pretty quickly into an out of control brawl. Everyone is working double time in this, but unsurprisingly, it's Pirata and Casas who are the stars here. Both guys are fucking bulldozers, knocking down everything that gets in their paths with fists, feet, and lariats. And their exchanges with each other are what you would hope they would be, particularly the one at the top of the match where Pirata drops Casas with a nasty powerbomb, and their wild brawling exchange leading to a false finish spot near the end. Said false finish is one of the better uses of referees as active participants in a match that I've seen, with Casas procuring La Casita and Tropi going to make the count, but Tirantes shoves him over and breaks up the pin. Pepe's not having any of that shit, though, so he gets back up and socks Tirantes in the jaw, and starts wailing on him in a manner befitting his family. The refs are pulled apart by the wrestlers, both get ejected in favor of Roberto Rangel, and the match ends shortly thereafter with all three Casas brothers grabbing La Casita on their opponents simultaneously for the win. They celebrate with their dad while Pirata is held back by AAA compatriot Elctroshock from attacking Bestia, whose CMLLness clearly is what cost them the match. This is only a single fall match, and there is one egregious Heavy Metal highspot flub (he tries to leap onto the top rope to do a flip onto Bestia on the outside, but he doesn't land the jump to the top right, and Bestia has to stand there like a dope while Heavy Metal tries to get his balance), but otherwise, this all action with everyone delivering the goods, and a fun finish where Tropicasas gets to channel his inner raging dad at his sons' Little League game. Pirata vs. Casas is a match-up that I need to see more of.

Pirata Morgan, Killing So His Power Grows

Pirata Morgan, Satanico, & MS-1 vs. La Fiera, El Faraon, & El Egipcio EMLL 3/29/1985 - EPIC

Damn, that was violent. I've had the chance to see Pirata in a bunch of different settings thanks to this project, but at the end of the day, he's still a guy at his best working out-of-control lucha brawls, and this here was an out-of-control lucha brawl. He starts right out by punching El Egipcio in the face when he tries to get in the ring. Egipcio returns the favor, and their brawling is sort of the big hook throughout this match (unsurprising, as they were building to a hair match between the two). I've seen a handful of Egipcio matches now, but this is the first time he's actually stood out to me. And yeah, that's probably because he was booked so prominently in the match, but when you're throwing hands with Pirata and look like you're actually in his league, I'm inclined to think you're doing something right. They pave a nice little path of destruction through the post-apocalyptic wasteland that is any good Infernales brawl, including some great brawling around the ring where Pirata wins the award for most violent apron bumping now and forever, actually breaking the wooden barricades surrounding the ring. Satanico and the recently deceased MS-1 lend some very able support. Satanico in particular almost stole the match from Pirata and Egipcio. Phil said he looked like the abusive husband in a Lifetime made-for-TV movie, and I'm hard-pressed to disagree. Fiera and Faraon maybe perform below expectations insofar as they don't stand out the way they usually do, but you'll be too busy in awe of the Infernales' brutality to notice. Although you will notice at the end of the match when Fiera uncorks a "Hector Garza under-rotating on a shooting star press to the floor"-level horrifying botched dive. He comes off of the top rope with essentially a completely vertical upside-down bodypress to Satanico, except he lands just short of the target and Martinetes himself on the floor. Ouch. Surprisingly, for a brawl this intense, there actually wasn't any blood, but I don't suspect you'll find too many bloodless brawls better than this one.

Pirata Morgan, Antifaz del Norte, & Charly Manson vs. Sangre Chicana, Alebrije, & Vampiro Canadiense Monterrey 5/21/2006 - GREAT

This is a big step up from the last Monterrey match I reviewed for this. There are still some annoying heel ref shenanigans, but he eats a Sangre Chicana armdrag really nicely, so I can't really complain too much. Also, there's no Hator in sight, and everyone looks really game here, even a load like Vampiro. This is a garbage brawl, and like most lucha garbage brawls, it feels less violent than it does when they leave the foreign objects alone, especially after the match above. But it's still on the higher end of your lucha garbage brawls, with Alebrije in particular looking like a star here. He eats and bumps for everything really well, including getting his head taken off with a nasty clothesline from Pirata, and taking some nutty bumps on the wooden ramp to the ring. And there's plenty of fun abuse of Cujie as well, with Pirata putting the little guy in a Romero special, before he's used as a projectile by Alebrije to get his revenge later. I thought Antifaz looked really good here as well. His foreign object shots all had some nice pop to them. This wasn't a standout Chicana performance, but I don't think I've ever seen a match where he looked bad, and this is no exception. If nothing else, he clotheslined a wooden board into Antifaz's face. That was pretty cool. I'm a little iffy on the finish, but I admire the gusto with which Pirata faked his getting fouled, especially after the ref didn't believe him right away and he started to sell more frantically.

Pirata Morgan, Emilio Charles Jr., & Astro de Oro vs. Rayo de Jalisco Jr., Mascara Ano 2000, & Cien Caras EMLL 1989 - FUN

This was a one-fall tournament match, but it's a four-team tourney, so they still get 10+ minutes and I can review it, just with lowered expectations. It's also apparently a parejas increibles tournament, as Rayo is not getting along with the Dinamitas, and Astro de Oro is not getting along with Pirata and Emilio. I am not familiar with this Astro de Oro character, so I checked out luchawiki to see what his deal was.

"Greatest Guatemala superstar. Tecnico, who teamed with Rayo Lazer, Skeletor, Starman (Guatemala), Silverman, Arriero de San Juan. Astro de Oro received 50 Quetzales in his first match.

His best match was versus Mascara Ano 2000 in June of 1989, and his worst was against Dr. Wagner Jr.. Astro de Oro's favorite wrestler is Ric Flair.

In his other life, Astro de Oro is an educator. Astro de Oro also claims to be a very successful amateur wrestler before entering lucha libre.

Greatest Guatemala superstar"

Well that clears that up. I don't know when exactly in 1989 this match was in relation to his career best match against Mascara Ano 2000, but I don't remember any especially great exchanges between the two. Overall, the greatest Guatemala superstar didn't make me forget Super Astro or Brazo de Oro, but he was harmless. Pirata and Rayo were the best guys on their respective teams, and their work against each other was plenty fun and fired up. Emilio looked good, but you'll see much better from him, and the Dinamitas were solid but unspectacular. Still, Rayo doing his comedic evasive twirl face-first into Pirata's fist with nobody else fucking anything up will at least earn this FUN status. In conclusion, greatest Guatemala superstar.

Loosely Formed 1998 WWF: Rock n Rolls! Aguila! Pirata Morgan!

Rock n Roll Express vs. The Head Bangers WWF Raw 2/23

This is continued proof of Rock n Roll Express busting ass during this too brief WWF stint. The first half of this was made up of Rock n Roll misdirection spots where they kept accidentally hitting each other while getting more and more frustrated about it. Morton and Gibson's timing looked excellent and some of the spots were complicated enough that I'm not sure there's another team on the roster that could have done them. Actually the other team that could have done them would have been Jarrett/Windham, so that's just more testament that the made-to-fail NWA stable actually ruled for two months. 

Ricky did a great version of the spot where he's running over Gibson and Mosh's dropdowns before colliding with Gibson, Gibson accidentally punches Morton off the apron, Ricky snapmares Thrasher into the ring and whips him across the ring which bumps Gibson off the apron, just expertly set up and executed misdirections from Ricky and Robert. 

Cornette expertly hooked Mosh's leg while looking away and Gibson hit the damn cleanest kneedrop right to the side of Mosh's head, then kneels down with one onto Mosh's forehead, then another onto his shoulder. 

Gibson sure took a lot of great bumps to the floor during this run, and he takes big one to set up the finish. What's the other late 90s Gibson I need to seek out? 

Pirata Morgan vs. Aguila WWF Shotgun 2/28

I had no memory of Pirata Morgan doing a two match WWF stint in 1998. Morgan/Brian Christopher vs. Taka/Aguila from the 2/16/98 Raw is insanely fun and an incredible visual representation of Pirata. He IS Pirata Morgan in that match, and it's great to see. He is not as great here, as this match is more about letting Aguila show off his surprisingly deep (especially for 1998) flying moveset. Pirata was here to be a base, and he's great at being a base. I wish he could have also beat the shit out of Aguila in between being a base. 

Pure unfiltered Aguila was some insane stuff. The height he got here on flapjack bump and a truly insane moonsault press to the floor were wild, just incredible hang time, and his springboard armdrag to send Morgan to the floor was some Juvy level shit. And brother, if you're talking hang time, he took a backdrop bump so high that, were there some kind of database that were actually tracking this, would almost surely rank towards the top of the All Time Most Hang Time on a Backdrop list. I wish I had been keeping a list like that, with to the hundredth of a second stop watch times next to all of them. 

Pirata's premier piece of offense is actually amazing, a tilt a whirl sitout powerbomb that is so damn cool, like something I've never seen. We have so many complicated fast moving big crash landing spots now and I don't think I've seen anyone break out a kick ass sitout powerbomb like this:

Pirata, in this match, also does maybe the laziest waistlock takedown I've ever seen, moving to a rear waistlock by just walking around Aguila, then lifting him waist high and just dropping him. They're not all going to be sitout powerbombs. 

Pirata takes a big bump off the top off an armdrag and puffs his chest out to take a missile dropkick, and the victory roll huracanrana roll up looked like something that would win a match.

Don't Ask if They Are Real, Pirata Morgan, His Lips Are Sealed

Pirata Morgan vs. Fabuloso Blondy EMLL 12/10/1989 - EPIC

It should be said that Ken Timbs sings our national anthem better than most. The Star-Spangled Banner is a notoriously difficult national anthem to sing, and he was doing it every night like it was second nature. I appreciate that. This match makes a very interesting contrast to Pirata's title match with Brazo de Oro, which was all about two guys who don't really fit the lucha title match style trying to adjust to it's standards. This is a match where reigning champ Pirata seems to have acclimated to the style, and it's outsider Blondy who initially finds himself at odds with it, and how that affects the way the match plays out. This means a couple of things. For one, this is easily the most matwork-heavy performance I've ever seen Pirata give, and I was genuinely impressed by how much depth he showed in that area. He pulled out a pretty wide variety of cool stuff that I did not know he had, and looked comfortable enough in the role that I'm almost surprised we don't see him working more of a Black Terry-ish brawler/maestro dual-class style today, because he could probably still do a lot of that and would be less physically demanding. Secondly, this is probably the closest thing I've seen to a territory era Ric Flair NWA Title defense in lucha. Georgia heel Timbs is even more out of place in this setting than Pirata and Brazo were in their match, but like that match, that's the fun of it. But watching him stooging while Pirata tangled him up on the mat reminded me less of any other lucha title match and more of Flair stooging for Kevin Von Erich's MUGA headscissors routine in 1983. And like Flair, when Blondy takes control, it's through more unsportsmanlike methods than you would normally associate with lucha title matches. Yet every time Morgan makes a comeback, he ends up going back to working holds. Yeah, this is a match where Pirata Morgan deliberately avoids brawling, and as uncharacteristic as that is of him, it really works for this kind of "my kung fu is stronger than yours" story. This had a pretty spectacular finish, too, as Gran Davis gets distracted, and Blondy takes advantage with what I can only describe as a foul suplex that gets the win. No friendly handshakes at the end of this lucha title match. I just hope I can find a nice, bloody hair vs. hair match to complement this.


Pirata Morga, Fuerza Guerrera, & Ricky Cruz vs. Scorpio Jr., Angelico, & Bobby Lee Jr. IWRG 6/4/2009 - FUN

This is right on the borderline of SKIPPABLE and FUN, as it's a match that didn't necessarily look good on paper, but did look intriguing on paper. It posed a lot of questions that I thought might be worth answering. How would Pirata and Fuerza - two of my personal favorite luchadors of all time - fare as partners? How would Pirata deal with the black hole of suck that is Angelico, whom even Negro Navarro struggled to get something watchable out of. Can Scorpio Jr. actually work technico? All these questions and more were not really answered to my satisfaction, so this was kind of a letdown. Pirata and Fuerza didn't really work together much, save for one bizarre sequence in the third fall where they tease dissension for no real reason and then hug epically. Angelico was kept in a supporting role, which was a good thing, but didn't answer any questions I might have had about him. Scorpio didn't really work any differently as a face than as a heel, though he was a lot more broken down, and at times, this almost felt like a Great Khali match, where you have to accept that he is not going to react to stuff like he's supposed to because he flat out can't. But while none of the questions I asked got answered, and a lot of the frustrations I expected from this crew were present, it was still mostly enjoyable. Ricky Cruz looks like he is auditioning to be El Mesias Jr. in case Ricky Banderas ever falls out of favor with AAA, and he acquitted himself well with his hurty power/brawler offense. He also was paired off with Angelico a lot, and he handled that task about as well as one could reasonably expect. For his own part, Angelico looked like shit throughout this, but he did at least bust out a Vader Double Stomp (that's a Vader Bomb ending in a double stomp instead of a splash), which was pretty nasty. Pirata and Fuerza both looked good holding the match together. Bobby Lee Jr. was unremarkable but fine. There was also a weird bit with the rudo ref getting involved that could've been lame, but ended too spectacularly for me to hold against it. So, yeah, very flawed, not very interesting, but Ricky Cruz beating on dudes was entertaining.

Complete and Accurate Black Terry

Black Terry is pretty much the perfect Segunda Caida complete and accurate wrestler. A long excellent career, a guy who has been quietly one of the best wrestlers in the world for the last 25 years, but a guy who we at Segunda Caida really started beating the drum for on the internet. Tremendous mat wrestler, excellent traditional rudo base and the best brawler in the world. Like the Fujiwara reviews, some of these will be cut and pasted from other places, some will include Tomk thoughts as well, I apologize in advance if I repeat jokes or talking points.
