All Japan Motherload - Terry Funk vs. Ray Candy - AJPW 3/8/80

ER: In which Funk starts the match by bumping wildly for Candy, including getting tossed to the floor and somersaulting it like Hamrick, then getting punched into taking a back bump to the floor off the apron. Candy is a guy I've seen mainly as Kareem Muhammad, several years after this match. Here his punches get better the longer the match goes on, and Funk knows how to put over a bearhug better than any other wrestler ever (and I'm always a sucker for a bearhug spot). Funk fights to comeback with awesome windup headbutts - forgetting in a refreshingly progessive, colorless mindset that Candy IS, indeed, very much an African American, and thus tantamount to headbutting a brick wall. Funk does not see color when he headbutts, and so Funk tirelessly hits that brick wall, and his facials as he realizes his actions are foolhardy are maybe the best part of the match. Crowd goes nuts as Funk starts peppering in right hands and I dig the Thesz Press finish. Abby and some fresh faced youngster run in after. Oh, why it's that young hunk Clean Dick Slater!
