Fire Fundraiser: All Star Wrestling UK 3/10/14 Review

This was a show review requested by Davey C! He said I could review as much or as little as I liked, but the show was like 75 total minutes, so a full match review didn't seem like such a crazy idea.


1. Andy Simmons vs. JD Bryant

Bryant starts the match doing a Daniel Bryan Yes! chant to get the crowd going. I assume that was the 2014 equivalent to doing a Stunner on a 1999 indie show. I had never seen either of these two before, and by the end of the match I definitely wouldn't mind seeing more. Simmons especially is a real good hand, knowing how to work slight heel to get the crowd into Bryant, working him over with real simple but real well executed things like low cut clotheslines, kicks to the stomach with no light showing, nice open hand strikes, knees to the stomach that land, drop downs that actually look like he's trying to trip up Bryant. Simmons' style seems like it could easily adapt to having a good 10 minute match with anybody. Bryant for his part is a good underdog babyface. He also throws some nice open hand strikes (including two great southpaw strikes at the beginning), takes a nice flipping spill to the floor, throws a nice dropkick and admirably sells his arm (Simmons had been working it over with a couple great kneedrops). Match ends quick without much build, but it was still satisfying. Real good start to this show.

2. David Finlay Jr. vs. Danny Boy Collins

Collins has been showing up on UK cards for seemingly a few decades now, and I love him getting on the stick before the match to tell Finlay that he's going to pay him back for every single cut, bruise and stitch he got at the hands of his father. And this match was awesome, yet threatened to be ruined by a pointless fast timekeeper time limit draw. We'll start with the good, get to the stupid, and wrap it up with a smile: I loved the match, and would have loved it more on mute. Collins is a monster in this, very much like Finlay Sr. lacing into a rookie for 10+ minutes. Everything Collins does looks great, from his strikes to his matwork to his transitions. Every little move means something, and he never rests on his laurels. A choke in the ropes looked as dangerous as any submission, and his submissions looked brutal. There were no resting chinlocks here, mister. Everything Collins locked on looked like it was strangling the life out of young Finlay. Every backbreaker looked nasty. Every arm wringer and hammerlock looked like it was stretching all of the ligaments. Collins racks up a couple quick warnings, dropping Finlay with a nasty hotshot and tossing him to the floor in dastardly fashion. Finlay gets some momentary comebacks (with Collins taking a super high backdrop during one of them) but always loses it quick due to Collins' smarts. Now the stupid kicks in: At the 12 minute mark we get a "15 minute" announcement, which means we all know this is going the full 20. 30 seconds later we get a "3 minute warning", and if there was any doubt this was going time limit, now that the clock is on 4x everybody watching realizes it. What's sad, is the home stretch was real fun. Finlay got fired up and started going crazy with nearfalls, and Collins was awesome at putting over these nearfalls and getting into position to be rolled up; running chest first hard into the buckles to get a believable 2.9, and Finlay was great at making these pinfalls look like they could actually hold a man down. But the timekeeper suddenly going into 4x mode just sucked me right out of what should have been a very exciting home stretch. We end up with a 14 minute match going the full "20 minute time limit" and I just can't help but wonder why they didn't just do a 15 minute time limit? Everybody watching this knows how to count, and everybody has an idea of how long one minute is. It's insulting and incredibly dated to expect people to fall for this kind of time clock idiocy. Collins was so damn good at making all of Finlay's potential pins mean something, and the idiot fed was trying their hardest to make nobody expect a finish. Just took the legs right out of it. BUT that is not the fault of the two men, and regardless of timeclock idiocy they had an awesome match. Shame though.

3. Dean Allmark vs. Thunder

Short (7 minutes) but solid match with Thunder as the judiciously bumping big man and Allmark as the quick little bumblebee. Allmark's dodges and feints were nice, rolling out of the way, believably sliding through the legs, and Thunder was smart about when to bump and when not to. A couple dropkicks don't take him down but one close to the ropes sends him over the top. That's just smart attention to physics. Allmark's solid dodging skills made it satisfying when Thunder would catch him with a clothesline, and we got some more smart spots of Allmark using Thunder's size against him, like catching a charging Thunder with boots before nailing a quick superkick to put him down, then a quick moonsault. Finish was well done with Allmark going back to the top, Thunder a standing duck, so he shoves the ref into the ropes which then crotches Allmark, opening him up for a superplex. With more time these two could likely have a real good match.

4. Oliver Grey vs. Justin Starr

Well I like how this started but things kind of fell apart halfway through, and we ended with just a sputter. Grey is not a guy I had seen on NXT (I...really need to catch up on NXT) but I liked him throughout this. The match started as good as the others on this card, with an engaging feeling out process and stiff shoulderblocks. Both guys really thudded into each other and I was expecting some good things. But Starr ended up being a kind of bland heel, really just kind of looking at the crowd with his arms out as his one way of getting heat. The longer the match went on the more clunky he was at getting into position for stuff, the finish run being the worst of it. We had a superkick set up by that awful teeter totter spot that HHH insists on shoehorning into every match, and Starr somehow made the bump look even sillier than HHH, just bunny hopping right into the buckle ever so daintily. Then he landed too close to the ropes after the superkick and had to shimmy a few feet away to get pinned. The really was the tale of two matches as when it was worked like a simple black trunks young boys match it worked nicely, and once they moved into bigger things it fell apart. Still wouldn't mind seeing more of Grey.

5. Jushin Liger vs. Robbie Dynamite

Well hey this was awesome. This might be the best I've seen Liger in a singles match in....shoot I can't remember the last time I saw Liger this engaged in a singles match. Something even feels different during the opening matwork as it's a lot less perfunctory than your usual match opening NJPWish stuff, with Dynamite wrenching in some armholds and Liger rotating through to an awesome grounded octopus hold. There's real struggle and scramble getting to the ropes and Dynamite was bringing out some good stuff in Liger. Dynamite fed into all of Liger's best stuff, and didn't ease up his own offense at all. He took a couple real nice bumps to the floor (especially dug a missed plancha crash and burn) and the way he flew chin first into a shotei. Liger hit a heavy somersault senton off the apron, ate knees on a frog splash, a nice rana off the top, planted Dynamite with a brainbuster. But it didn't feel like a Liger greatest hits, it felt like him integrating his known moveset to take down a liveblood challenger. Dynamite was really great throughout, providing a great base for Liger and then doing cool power moves like lifting Liger into a deadlift vertical suplex turned falcon arrow. This was just a real satisfying match with a quality build and finish. Both looked good and Dynamite is a guy I'd love to see more.


What a fun little show! Only one match I really didn't care for and even that seems like something that could be fixed. But everything had some worth to a degree, several guys I had never seen before looked incredibly polished, and now I want to see every Danny Boy Collins thing ever. That fine old man didn't miss a single step and looked like an absolute beast. I love old man Collins. He was my easy standout. But this was a fine fine show, and I'm glad Allmark seems to be regularly posting stuff from this fed. I want more.

MLJ: Cavernario vs Titan 8: Marco Corleone, Super Porky, Titán vs Bárbaro Cavernario, Mr. Niebla, Thunder & BONUS Casas/Santo vs Juvi/Nicho

I'm keeping this one short and tacking on another match, because this was probably the most Nothing Match in the history of Nothing Matches. My guess is that they actually did more to build up the Titan vs Cavernario title match during the cibernetico they ran around this time. That was in Arena Mexico a week before the title match. This was after that but in Guadalarja and there's just nothing to it. When I was halfway through it, the Busca cibernetico started and that was a godsend because it let me pause this and watch that instead.

I think it was clipped which didn't help but even if it wasn't I'm not sure that it'd matter. Niebla had been suspended after the Japan tour for being Niebla and he was completely and utterly unrepentent here upon his return. Porky was more immobile than ever. No one wants to see Thunder and Marco and I like Marco more than most people. I do think that they've worked enough that they've developed some effective shtick but it's nothing I want to see. They didn't let anything breathe. The heat lasted less than a minute. The comeback, the same. The opening exchanges were brief. On the one hand, it drained any emotional reaction from the match other than a slight guffaw. On the other, I'm not sure I wanted to see five minutes of punishment on Porky by Thunder.

In the midst of all this, you'd figure that Titan and Cavernario would be the saving grace of the match, and maybe in a bubble it should have been. They hit a lot of their stuff, including the reverse monkey flip/superkick spot. Titan hit his moonsault at the end. Cavernario had some great flurries of offense. They did the press up dropkick. It's just that I've seen them run through this stuff so much recently that it, in and of itself, wasn't enough to carry a match.

I will say this. The crowd seemed really happy with this match, and they always seem happy with matches like this. They get a kick out of Marco's antics. They love the spit spot. Porky got a big chant after he fell off the apron onto Niebla. Zacarias got involved. You can't fault a match too much when it's a big crowd pleaser. It sure didn't add to my excitement for the impending title match though.

El Hijo Del Santo & Negro Casas © b Juventud Guerrera & Nicho el Millionario [CMLL TAG]

I felt bad for dumping the previous match on everyone without providing something a little more interesting as well. This just dropped online in the last week or two. It's a bit of a mess to be honest, but it's a mess wrestled by guys so talented that it's still worth watching. There's a real novelty to seeing Santo and Casas pair up against Nicho and Juvi.

I just don't have a ton to say about it. Juvi was so dynamic and so great at using his own body as a weapon, but he and Nicho could definitely hang. They felt like they belonged in the ring, but there was also a sense of them being outsiders having come in to challenge for the belts. There were some individually nice spots, like the way Nicho took out Santo on a reversal in the primera or Casas killing Juvi with a hotshot and the huge Santo tope that followed. It was the first time I've seen Santo and Casas do a Doomsday Device with a Santo tope (non-suicida) off the top and the first time I've seen Santo do a sunset flip powerbomb off the apron.

All in all, it had the real feel of an attraction match. It just needed a few more minutes and a bit more focus. It's worth watching as a novelty though.

CMLL Workrate Round-Up 7/27/14, 10/17/14 & 10/31/14

1. Silueta vs. Zeuxis (7/27/14)

Nice little women's match, the kind we don't normally get to see. It was billed as a lightning match but really wasn't worked like one, other than it being una caida. We get a nice 10 minutes match with a bunch of cool arm and leg work and some big flashy spots. They both have a couple cool armbar roll throughs and there was an especially good sequence with Zeuxis locking on an armbar and sort of rolling it through into a Yes Lock as Silueta was about to get to the ropes. We even get a Frye/Shamrock dueling knee bar section. Zeuxis throws a bunch of stiff kicks during this and does a great running double knee attack in the corner, Silueta does some nice ranas, and this was all fun. Although is it just me or do most women wrestlers run the ropes really awkwardly? It seems like every time they had to run ropes or run into the turnbuckles it was like their bodies were just not designed to do so. I've noticed this before with others and all the movements just look completely foreign.

2. Mascara Dorada, Stuka Jr. & Maximo vs. Shocker, Thunder & Euforia (10/17/14)

So…I think I kinda like Thunder. He's a big lug and I'll probably get sick of him at some point, but right now I dig what he brings to matches. He seems very mobile which already sets him apart from past large white guys that CMLL has brought in. I like his power offense based around catching guys mid-flying move and then just tossing them. He's got a really great fallaway slam and some nice strikes. I like how he mixed up his corner shots with kicks, nice punches, and then ends it with a Zidane headbutt. This was probably the best Shocker has looked in a match this year. The Rush series was good, but more about a young punk taking advantage of an out of shape older guy. Shocker was a jerk in this and looked more fired up than any non-Rush match I've seen him in lately. Not only did he break out some nasty strikes, including a couple stiff punches and a rough stomp to the face, but he did a cool fat guy senton, and even took the straps down to mockingly flex his chubbiness to the crowd. Dorada is a guy I like a lot, probably more than most, as I like the way he incorporates his athleticism into matches, always taking super high bumps on backdrops, and doing cool things that most workers can't do. Here he does his awesome high jump rana, sprinting from the ramp over the ropes and into the ring. This was short and sweet, real good mix of stuff.

3. Lightning Match: Dragon Lee vs. Kamaitachi (10/17/14)

Well this was crazy! Going a little over 6 minutes, this would have been a legendary WorldWide match. Both guys get to show off wild offense, both guys take big bumps, both guys were very likely sore on Saturday. We get a run of Kamaitachi doing running horizontal dropkicks (the kind where you fling your legs straight out and land in a back bump), first a normal one in the ring, then one leaping from the rampway over the ropes into the ring (which Lee runs stupidly/awesomely chin first right into, flipping him asshole over elbow), then one running from the apron to the floor. Awesome. Then Lee does a crazy one of his own to the floor and I'm fully invested at this point. Both guys really fly into the other's offense with gusto, with Kamaitachi launching himself off a German and getting his chest caved in while hung up on the turnbuckle and taking a Lee double stomp off the top. The finish is great as they have a really cool strike exchange, with both men throwing stiff shots and mixing up the timing of them, cutting each other off, all building to Lee hitting one of the more insane suplexes that I've seen, kind of like a Musclebuster but dropped more like a Northern Lights. It certainly looked like Kamaitachi will end up an inch or two shorter. Go watch this. In 6 easy minutes it will bring joy to your day.

4. Rush vs. Ultimo Guerrero (10/31/14)

This was from the Halloween show which was probably the most batshit atmosphere of any show this year. The crowd was hot, and the mood was freaking weird as most of the guys on the show were wearing skeleton body and face paint, even the referees were all decked out like skeletons, and all the CMLL chicas were painted up like sugar skulls while the arena was filled with overworking smoke machines and eerie red lights. Truly unique atmosphere for everything. I got a huge kick out of all the girls rhythmically dancing in their calavera get-ups. I thought the whole show was lifted up by the presentation, and this match especially was really fun. Both guys really pulled out all the stops to try and one up the other. This felt like something that could have really been classic if there was blood allowed. I enjoyed it as it, but the environment was just begging for blood. Both guys worked plenty stiff and there were some nice nearfalls, really dig UG planting Rush with a mean Liger bomb. The week before Rush planted UG with a brutal ballshot and I wish that would have been played up more here, but UG did sorta get revenge by winning with his own tiny ballshot.

CMLL Workrate Round-Up 10/10/14 & 7/20/14

1. Kraneo, Mr. Niebla & Shocker vs. Marco Corleone, Diamante Azul & Valiente (10/10/14)

Short and sweet match with tons of great Kraneo moments. Not only is Kraneo really great, but I think he brings the best out in guys like Niebla. Niebla is not as good as Kraneo, but nobody wants to be the dog of the match. Kraneo is just a total beast though and also makes opponents look great. He spectacularly ends a fall with a wild senton off the top, but also takes a massive bump to the floor off a Marco clothesline, really whipping himself over the top super fast, but also does little detail rudo things like holding Corleone in place by *grabbing his balls from behind*!! Then casually walking off tapping his own inner thigh to the boos of the crowd. Marco kicks things up a notch too in his work opposite Kraneo as he's really the only luchador in CMLL who can match him for size (although Thunder is pretty huge as well), and Marco logically uses his size in the tercera to wipe out Kraneo/Niebla with his huge no hands plancha, this time from ring to floor (instead of his usual ramp to ring). Kraneo is a bull and these kind of matches are almost always worth watching to see what he'll do.

2. Rush, La Sombra & La Mascara vs. Ultimo Guerrero, Thunder & Euforia (10/10/14)

Also quick and to the point, with Ingobernales going over in straight falls, but it is notable for an actual spirited and fine tecnico appearance from Thunder. Thunder is a guy who has not really registered with me so far, other than "hey that guy is large and muscle-y" but here at the end of the primera there he was out on the floor dishing stiff shots to Ingobernales. UG is a guy I like but here he just works like UG, rudo or tecnico, just UG here. Thunder actually worked like a tecnico who had been disrespected by these douchey coveralls wearing punks. You knew what you were getting from the rudos in this, but I was pleasantly surprised by the tecnico I knew least about.

3. Metalico, Cancerbero & Raziel vs. Oro Jr., Starman & Triton (7/20/14)

I love when little matches like this exceed non-existent expectations. Nobody ever expects anything out of a third match on a Sunday card. I've seen dozens of these and most of the time they are exactly what you think they're going to be. I mean look at those 6 names. That is a list of maybe the 6 most "also rans" on any given CMLL midcard. If I asked you "hey name 10 luchadors whose names you always see in results and stuff but you don't actually go out of your way to watch" there is a good chance all six of those names pop up on that top 10. And then occasionally those kind of guys give you get a fun little gem like this one where everybody works hard and seems like they're all trying to stand out. Metalico was a little ball of rage here. Up until now if somebody had asked me about Metalico I would have told them that he was definitely one of the top 5-10 guys in CMLL with a Tiger gimmick. But here he was a total asshole southern heel. He stiffed up all the tecnicos and especially targeted Oro Jr., was constantly taking cheap shots at guys on the apron, and was cursing and spitting at the crowd from the apron, and begging off in the tercera. He was wrestling like a guy who just got laid off but was then asked to finish out the week, oh and also we won't be giving you a recommendation. Oro Jr. was a fun punching bag and took some mean bullying from all the rudos. His "pushed too far" moment was satisfying. Starman hits a wild tope (I think Phil may have dubbed this year the "Return of the Classic Lucha Tope" and this one can be added onto that list) and this match was just unexpectedly fun. And damn man, Metalico. I like this guy pissed off. It was kind of a weird out of nowhere performance as I don't ever remember him doing this stuff before, and other guys in the match were still trying to have a traditional lucha match, but shoot Metalico's act would have played well on the 80s Memphis set.

Lucha Azteca Workrate Report, 11/9/13

New CMLL show popped up on that same channel that's been showing the Uprising: Lucha Libre shows. I'm game. Any channel that delivers Blue Panther to my TV on a Saturday afternoon is a friend of mine. These matches were from the 10/25 Arena Mexico show.



1. Blue Panther, Maximo, & Mistico vs. Ultimo Guerrero, Euforia, & Gran Guerrero

By the numbers six man that is fun for what it is, but doesn't get to the next level. Panther has some nice moments including a mammoth dive. Euforia does the lord's work by bumping around huge for Mistico and catching his beautiful rana off the top rope to the floor. Maximo is always underrated and flows throws his sequences more naturally than most (also threw a nice headbutt on his tope). Enough fun spots to make it worth your time.



2. Lightning Match: Mascara Dorada vs. Niebla Roja

Lightning matches are almost always disappointing, but Dorada works them better than most as he has enough spectacular offense to work through to override the rushed pace of the format. He he gets to rattle off a rope walk rana, big Asai moonsault, beautiful running rana off the rampway to the floor. Both guys scare the hell out of me as Roja does the Pepsi Plunge and Dorada almost takes it the way Cham Pain took that Pedigree from HHH. Good lord. Naturally that doesn't end the lightning match even though it's the most dangerous lucha spot I've seen in the last couple months. Match ends with a Dorada roll-up, for reasons.



3. Rush, La Sombra, & Thunder vs. Terrible, Vangelis, & Tama Tonga

This is my first time seeing Thunder, and he sure seems like a muscled up dud. Really slow, stiff and clumsy. La Sombra seems like he's really bulked up too. He seemed a lot slower than normal. Tama Tonga looks like either Drago from Game of Thrones or like the most badass Rafi from The League. Terrible is a total goofball but it kinda works when against a stiff like Thunder. This match is watchable of course because of Rush. All of his segments are great, the way he taunts the crowd is great, and jesus his headbutts are awesome. I've never seen anybody throw a headbutt like him, it's like he's tossing out an uppercut with his head. So great. So, match is kinda weak but worth watching if you're a Rush fan (Fly By Night, Moving Pictures, etc.)
